Ruth Day Burtnick (Ruth Glick), también conocida como Rebecca York, nació el 27 de abril de 1942 en Lexington, Kentucky, Estados Unidos, hija de Lester Leon Burtnick, psiquiatra, y Beverly Miller Burtnick, profesora de ciencias de la escuela media. Ella fue criada en Washington, DC, ella ganó un B.A. en el Pensamiento y la Civilización Americanos de la universidad de George Washington y un M.A. en estudios americanos de la universidad de Maryland. El 30 de junio de 1963, se casó con Norman S. Glick, un matemático para el Departamento de Defensa. Tienen dos hijos: Elissa, un bibliotecario, y Ethan, un Oficial de Servicio Exterior.
Ruth Day disfruta cocinar, caminar, leer, la jardinería, la recolección de rocas, los viajes y óperas de Mozart.
